My family is here in the US because of “chain migration:, more properly and legally known as family reunification. Blue jersey dad's grandfather came to work in the US and stayed with his brother-in-law in NJ. He made enough money to bring his wife and 7 kids (including my father-in-law) to the US in the early 20th century. They came to the US from southern Italy, a place that Trump would certainly consider a shit hole. My FIL came to the US when he was 9 or 10 years old. He had to drop out of school at age 12 and go to work. He studied on his own and passed the tests to complete an 8th-grade education. My father-in-law owned a hardware store that failed during the Great Depression. After that he worked in a deli.
Blue jersey dad was the first member of his family to graduate from college. He has a PhD from Columbia. He is now retired, but he spent most of his career as an archaeologist for the National Park Service.
My oldest son has a PhD from Cambridge University in the UK. He is one of the co-authors of the recent studies that identified the pathogen that may have caused the deaths of so many people in Mesoamerica at the time of Spanish contact. He works in conservation biology at the Smithsonian.
My middle son has a BA (Summa cum Laude, unlike the Trumps) from the University of Pennsylvania and an MFA in writing from the the Tisch School of the Arts at NYU. He teaches middle school English and Social Studies at a public charter in Los Angeles. His students are almost all Latino and Latina. Many of their parents are undocumented.
My youngest son (Magna cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa at Franklin and Marshall) is working on a PhD in US politics and government at the University of Maryland. Last semester he was a teaching assistant for a course on race in the age of Obama.
Maybe Trump should send us all back to Italy. Of course, Italy won't take us back because blue jersey dad's father became a naturalized US citizen some time in the late 1910s.
We should not accept the right-wing framework. It is family reunification, not chain migration. With the exception of the Native Americans and those who were brought to this country unwillingly on slave ships, the US is a nation of immigrants. I despise Donald Trump, and I welcome immigrants from shit hole countries around the world. Parts of my family came to the US from Ireland. I am sure that Trump would have considered Ireland a shit hole too.
